Hadrian's Wall 2

When "uncle" Mike arrived he said the main thing he wanted to do was to walk a few miles on Hadrian's Wall, so I said I would go along. Driving made getting there much easier, but upon arrival it was MUCH colder than the last time I was there. We parked at the end point of The Roman Fort Museum and took a bus back to the Homestead Fort to start walking. Mike thought it would be about 8 miles. It turns out that you don't really walk on the wall other than around the HOmestead Fort, so we walked right next to it. I decided it would be in my best interest to purchase a winter hat for the occasion as I did not have the forethought to bring one with me. It was drizzly, windy, and cold, which in Mike's opinion perfect weather to get the experience of what Mike envisioned life to be like for the the Roman soldiers protecting the wall.

The Starting Point...

We were able to walk on the wall initially, but after that we walked along side it.

Burrr....it is cold out here.

As we were walking through a field we saw this herd of cattle watching us as we moved toward them. They were standing where we needed to cross over the fence to the next field. They were a little intimidating to say the least, which made us look for another exit to the next field.

The following photos were of the highest part of the wall, which was about 13 stiles tall. We had been walking slightly below the wall at this point, but noticed on the map the description of the height of the wall. This allowed for a steep up hill climb during the 9th mile of our hike. Boy was that fun...once we reached the top it was beautiful and quite impressive.

We started the hike in the drizzly rain and we ended the hike in the drizzly rain. We went to into the shop in the parking lot and talked to the woman working there. She informed us that instead of walking 8 miles we walked about 10 miles. No wonder my feet hurt!
