2010 World Cup
For those of you who don't know England played the United States in the World Cup tonight at 7:30pm.
This was "Uncle" Mike's last night in York, so we decided to head to a bar and attempt to watch the game. I have to admit I have never watched a professional Football/Soccer game on TV, but I do understand the game for the most part. We stopped at the first bar we came to...The Mount. There ended up being about 30 to 40 people watching the game. We came in during the national anthem for England and stayed for the entire game. It was SOOOO exciting! England scored in the first 4 minutes, so we did not know what we were in for. The USA got really lucky with their goal. The atmosphere was something else. I guess with a 1-1 tie the USA has a good chance of advancing. We shall see.
There were a group of Scottish men and women not so much rooting for the USA, but rooting against England. There was 1 very intoxicated Scottish man who fell right onto my back spilling 1/2 my drink. Gotta love spending the evening in a bar. Oh well. All part of the experience. As we were leaving the Scottish women stopped us and asked if we were American. I guess they were whispering to each others during the game "They are American". I have found that to be very interesting. If I am asked where I am from, I always say the United States, but the majority of English always refer to me as "American".
It was a very fun evening. I might even try to watch a few more World Cup games. My niece Megan and my brother Mark would have been proud of me.
